The intention and goal of PatchX is to give every child access to a computer. Kids will need to know how to use a computer in everything they will do in their lives. Learning a computer is like learning a sport. You can learn at school or practice but to really become good you need to go home and practice on your own. In order for a child to do this they need to have a computer.

There are many, many computers that are too slow for businesses but would be great for a child to use. Some of these computers are going to land fills or sit in closets at offices. It is a shame that something that could be put to use would be sitting on a shelf or land fill.

You may be asking about the name PatchX. The Patch is the patching kids into computers. The X is the number of the computer we have built. So for every computer we do they will be given the next number and their own Wiki page. The first two computers that we have done are named Patch1 and Patch2. They were both for the Roanoke, Virginia YMCA child watch area. If you have computers that you would like to either contribute or fix up for kids you may know please drop us an email. We can assign you your own PatchX number for your computer. Our first goal is small with just 10 computers delivered with pages on this site completed. Our next will be 50 then 100.

Some guidelines

  • Must be a child 14 or younger or a handicapped individual
  • After computer delivery we ask for a couple of pictures of the computer at the residence with the child using it
  • No personal information about the recipient should be posted on their Wiki page
  • Software that is installed should be posted on the site
  • Hardware specifications should also be posted on the site
